Support the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)
Farm Bureau leaders across America have joined together and are strongly urging every Farm Bureau member to contact their members of Congress and urge them to pass the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement this fall.
American Farm Bureau President Zippy Duvall put it best: "Our farm and ranch businesses lose when our nation leaves trade deals on the table that would level the playing field. American-grown and -made means quality, and customers around the world know this. But high tariffs and other trade barriers put in place by countries like Japan will keep shutting out American businesses and agricultural goods if we refuse to lead the way in approving trade agreements that would move us forward."
It is estimated that under TPP annual net farm income will increase by $4.4 billion, driven by an increase of direct U.S. agricultural exports, and 40,100 jobs will be added to the U.S. economy, versus the scenario in which the U.S. fails to pass the agreement.
In Illinois, TPP will increase net cash agricultural receipts by $281 million per year.
President Duvall and the AFBF Board of Directors are calling for members across the country to contact Congress and urge them to enact TPP.
Take a few moments during this harvest season and reflect on your production, the prices you're receiving and the opportunities to boost farm income through expanded international trade.
Please explain to your Congressman and Senators what TPP would mean to your at this time of declining farm prices and income, or send a pre-written message urging action on TPP.
Failure to enact TPP won't see our trade situation stay the same but will lead to declining net exports and market share in important markets. Once again, we ask you to join Farm Bureau member across the country to express your support for action on the Trans Pacific Partnership.
Convincing Congress to pass TPP is an uphill fight. Please contact your legislators today!
There are no guarantees that Congress will pass this legislation - that's why your voice is so important! Only by ratifying TPP will Congress be able to tear down trade barriers, expand exports and boost farm incomes.
Illinois agriculture has much to gain - and lose - in this battle.
