Vocational Ag Career Training Scholarships are Available
Survey responses needed from Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers
Dr. Gerald Mashange at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is conducting a survey to better understand the unique challenges faced by socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers (SDFR) in our state. SDFR participation is crucial in helping us identify barriers and develop solutions to improve access to critical resources and support.
Growers are Encouraged to Join the Urban Growers Network
The Urban Growers Network is open to all urban growers, community gardeners, and urban agriculture partners in Illinois and Cook County. The purpose of this group is to offer networking, education, and resources related to growing an urban agriculture system in Illinois.
In addition to monthly meetings designed to provide resources and share timely information about upcoming programs and funding opportunities, the network shares information regarding connected programs such as agritourism, the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement, produce safety, farmers markets, capacity building, and farm to food bank.

Board approved strategy for future leadership growth
A leadership development and growth plan called Future Forward was approved by the Cook County Farm Bureau Board of Directors at their April Board of Directors meeting. The plan is an outline of a strategy to recruit, train, engage, and develop a new crop of young agriculturalists and members with a focus on leadership and involvement through education, program participation, and training.

For the past two years, Midwest Horse Fair has marked the beginning of our rodeo season. Just over three years ago, this wild ball of energy decorated with a thick mane and kinky tail entered our lives one Thursday evening. Our veterinarian called him “old fashion.” I prefer to call him “thick.”

Each year, there are certain days that have been identified as important to recognize and reflect upon…to observe. I feel like the observation days on the calendar are getting crowded, but I selected a few recent observation days to add my two cents.
